In order to get CBD out of hemp, it must be extracted. CBD isolate is produced by using a bit of a more detailed extraction process of its own. CBD isolate extraction starts out like other extraction processes used to make CBD. Once the initial extraction takes place, concentrated CBD is still full of all the plant material contained in the hemp plant itself.
You can also take CBD isolate directly. Simply add it to coconut oil (we recco the MCT version) and drop it under your tongue. When placed under the tongue and held for 60-90 seconds, the CBD isolate coconut oil enters the bloodstream faster than if swallowed, avoiding first passing the metabolism. Taking your servings of CBD isolate sublingually is the easiest, most straightforward method for use.
Cannabis, with its complex chemical structure, contains over 100 active cannabinoids aside from CBD. It also contains terpenes, which have anti-inflammatory properties, and are regarded as increasing the efficacy of cannabinoids. Although they are not rated as important as CBD when it comes medical benefits, some of these other cannabinoids have been found to have symptom alleviating qualities as well. The cannabinoids CBN and CBG for example, are found in most full-spectrum extracts and studies have shown that both contain anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and pain relieving properties.
You then take your first drop of CBD oil, wait 45 minutes, then ask the questions again. If you feel no different and there’s no change in the way you answer those questions, you increase the dose by small increments until you do notice a difference. You can continue this process over several days – and at some point, you’ll find that taking more doesn’t change your scores. That is your minimum effective dose.
Given the results of this study, it would seem to confirm that full-spectrum extract is preferable over CBD isolate for most CBD users, but CBD isolate is still frequently used and believed by some to be more effective than full-plant extract. This belief is led by the idea that CBD is the only medically sought after cannabinoid in the cannabis plant, aside from THC. Many CBD isolate users are under the impression that by consuming only the CBD cannabinoid and no terpenes or any other "unnecessary" components of the plant, they are getting a more powerful or effective dose of CBD. When vaping a CBD extract, which as stated previously, is considered to be the most efficient and quick-acting method of administering CBD, isolate users may feel that they are taking the most efficient route to CBD consumption. While this method might be efficient, the lack of entourage effect means the benefits are reduced when compared to full-spectrum CBD consumption.
Cost is another consideration. Most CBD oils are sold in concentrations of 300 to 750 mg, although this may range from less than 100 mg to more than 2,000. A good indicator of price-point is the cost per milligram. Low-cost CBD oils usually fall between five and 10 cents per mg; mid-range prices are 11 to 15 cents per mg; and higher-end oils cost 16 cents per mg or higher. Given these varying per-milligram costs, a bottle of CBD oil may be priced anywhere from $10 or less to $150 or more.
This may be a good place to point out that not all CBD products are created equal. The industry is still largely unregulated, and the quality and quantity of CBD in a given product will vary wildly. Third party testing definitely helps to monitor companies’ claims, but it’s still up to you as the consumer to do your homework on the best CBD products.
You should also keep an eye out for "full-spectrum" oils, which contain not just CBD, but a full range of cannabinoids – including trace amounts of THC. This won't be enough to make you high (and shouldn't even be enough to show up on drug tests), but it will allow you to reap the benefits of not just CBD but the "full spectrum" of cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant, producing what some experts have begun calling "the entourage effect."
Most of the CBD oil products independently tested have been shown to have inconsistent and insufficient dosage levels, often outrageously below stated claims. For instance, a bottle claiming 250mg of CBD actually had 7mg. This is unfortunately quite common. CBD Isolate is much more reliable for accurate dosing, so you are much more likely to get what you pay for. And it doesn’t cause the stomach upset that oil does.
As simple as the extraction and refining processes sound, they’re really not. Certain extraction methods can be done at home, but winterization is a bit more complicated than just storing your cannabis concentrate in the freezer for a few days.
